eBay Auctions for Charity

Go to eBay and click on Giving Works.
http://pages.ebay.com/givingworks/index.html

From there you can either buy an item that the seller has committed to donate a portion of the sale to charity.  You can also sell an item and have part or all of the proceeds go to charity.  There are lots of charities there, not all dedicated to helping hurricane victims, but worthwhile all the same.  I checked the American Red Cross link and there are over 400 pages of items for auction.  Great way to get and give at the same time.

If you were thinking of selling something on eBay, Why not donate part of the sale to the Red Cross?  Something to consider.

Camp Williams has been inundated with donated clothing that cannot be used.  Needs will change and will continue for the next several months. The American Red Cross, Greater Salt Lake Chapter, is requesting financial donations so they can purchase new clothing appropriate for the men, women and children at Camp Williams.  Donating clothes and other stuffs to the Deseret Industries will ensure that it gets where it needs to be, whether here or there.

    Avoiding Hurricane Aid Victim Scams

Unfortunately, some will try to take advantage of generosity.  Some rules to remember are highlighted in an article:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050906/ts_nm/scams_dc_5

Private donors should avoid giving personal data such as social security numbers, dates of birth and bank account information to any organization that says it is seeking disaster aid, and should make sure they are giving money to a legitimate organization, officials said.

Some scam artists seek funds by adopting names that are similar to those of well-known organizations, such as "Red Shield" instead of Red Cross. Others attempt to win the confidence of the donor by thanking them for past donations.

"Be skeptical if someone thanks you for a pledge you don't remember making," said Oriey Glenn of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is on the lookout for such scams.

Officials said the public should give directly to well-known organizations such as the Red Cross, rather than to an intermediary that might claim a "processing fee" to forward the donation. They also warned against organizations seeking a fee to help locate a family member caught up in the disaster.

Avoid giving to Web sites whose addresses end in ".com" since most nonprofit organizations use ."org," and beware of emails soliciting donations, since legitimate charitable groups typically avoid that approach.

Pray for vicitms of Hurricane Katrina

What we can do to help.  Aside from the donations of money, I think the most effective way to help is to pray.  There are so many hearts that are heavy, so many people that are tired and worn, I think prayer can help heal those burdens.

    Have a wonderful day,
    Jacob

More ways to help the Katrina victims

    From http://www.providentliving.org/content/display/0,11666,6147-1-3186-1,00.html#7
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    How has the Church responded?

Church Welfare Services personnel are in the area and are assessing the disaster and the most needed supplies. The Church has food and emergency supplies positioned in five local bishops' storehouses. In addition, truckloads of food, water, clothing, hygiene items, tents, tarps, and other items have been shipped to affected areas.

    How can I help?

All are encouraged to pray for those who suffer as well as for those providing relief. Funds may be provided to the Church to support relief efforts by:

An additional way to help would be to prepare needed items such as Hygiene Kits http://www.providentliving.org/content/display/0,11666,3471-1-1607-1,00.html

What if I would like to do more?

If you would like to help more than what has been suggested, please consider the following:
    • Funds are the immediate need. The Church often uses funds to purchase supplies near affected areas.
    • The Church cannot accept unsolicited contributions of materials, supplies, food, or other goods.
    • The Church does not ship unsolicited donations on behalf of individuals or groups.
    • The Church ships food and emergency supplies only after carefully assessing needs. Shipments often are coordinated with government and charitable agencies.
