About The Mormons: Update

A while back, I posted an article of a letter to the editor that I found floating around the internet concerning what nice people Mormons or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are. At that time I tried to verify the origin, but couldn't. I posted it anyway because it was nice, even if its origins were in question.

I received a comment asking on the origin and I stated I didn't know but if anyone had any information, that would be great.

Here is what I learned from people who have emailed me:

I found your page when I was searching to verify the Paul Allen letter. thought I would forward you the truth..it's interesting how long something can go around on the web. It's still a great letter, just not from the owner of the Seattle Seahawks.

This is from the Signal website, the daily newspaper from Santa Clarita California.

Eureka. You have found it.

If you are reading this, you are one of countless thousands of people who want to know about the "Paul Allen letter" — quite possibly the most widely distributed thing in the wild and wacky world of the Web.
Was it that Paul Allen? Did we really publish all the nice things he said about Mormons?
We'll tell you what we know — but before we do, we must ask a huge favor:
Please, please, please. Please do not call or send e-mail to us at The Signal, asking about Paul Allen.
It's not that we don't want to be customer friendly. It's just that in the last six years (yes!), we have received anywhere from five inquiries per week to 10 or more inquiries PER DAY about this, and we simply don't have the staff resources to handle it anymore. Please have mercy. We fervently hope this web page will answer any questions you may have.

OK, here is what we know:

We are The Signal. The Signal is the daily newspaper of Santa Clarita, California (northern Los Angeles County).
We have published Paul Allen's letter(s) to the editor, just as we publish any letter from any other local resident.
Paul Allen is not, and never was, an editor or employee of The Signal newspaper (or, to our knowledge, of any other newspaper). Paul Allen was a local resident who wrote a letter to the editor. Simple as that. We don't know him, and we don't know how to contact him.
This was not the Paul Allen of Microsoft (or the Seattle Seahawks or Portland Trail Blazers). It's simply some person named Paul Allen.
We published the letter in question on Nov. 24, 2000. Yes, it was that long ago.
We do not normally archive letters to the editor on our Web site — but you'll find Paul Allen's letter below.
We have a large and active Mormon community here in the Santa Clarita Valley, with a lot of LDS members holding political office — including Congress — so Paul Allen's letter was not particularly "unusual" to us.

Sincerely,
LEON WORDEN

and another
According to The Santa Clarita Signal's home page, this
editorial was first published November 24, 2000. The
author, Paul Allen is NOT the Paul Allen of Seattle
Seahawks/Portland Trailblazer/Microsoft fame (according to
the-signal.com). They have a lengthy plea to the public to
stop calling/e-mailing them about this letter - after six
years they are still getting as many as 10 calls a day!

Finally, you can read it on the The Signal website. Thanks to all who responded with this information.
